ABOUT ALBANIA

The land of potential, Albania! Nestled between the stunning Adriatic and Ionian Seas, the country has an ideal coastal line to relax. Land inwards, you’ll find those typical Balkan landscapes. In this blog, we’re setting our sights on two destinations within Albania: the capital city of Tirana and the seaside resort of Ksamil.

WHAT TO DO IN ALBANIA

  • Discover the capital of Albania, Tirana

  • Find the spots in & around Ksamil

Discover the capital of Albania, Tirana

Albania is generally undiscovered and therefore cheap. However, its starting to get noticed by the masses of tourists pretty quickly now, so if you want to visit Albania, better earlier than later.

When you fly to Albania, you’ll probably land in Tirana. You can either rent a car and drive all the way down to Ksamil (4/5 hour drive), or you can start off in Tirana and end up in Ksamil once you have discovered Tirana.

Our trip started in Tirana, at Skanderbeg Square. Named after their national hero, George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, this square is a blend of history and modernity. Here you can walk around and soak in the atmosphere that surrounds it.

Tirana is a capital in which you have to look around a bit better in order to find some nice things to see or do. So after a casual walk around Blloku, once a restricted area for high-ranking officials, now one of the trendiest neighborhood in Tirana, we decided to have a seat at a botanical garden restaurant, called Millennium Garden. This place has great food and great drinks, but the prices are not as cheap as the rest of Albania. This goes for more of the popular spots in Tirana. We’ve listed some other options down below, with some of them being traditional (T) which means cheap and local food, and some of them more common food and drinks, therefore higher prices.

  • L’osteria (pasta) (T)

  • Happy Belly/Eat Smart (juices) (T)

  • Artigiano et Vila (Mediterranean)

  • LIFT steak & rooftop bar (steakhouse)

  • Tartuf Shop (truffle food)

  • Komiteti (bar) (T)

Some other nice places to go close to Tirana are:

  • Bovilla lake (1 hour drive)

  • Theth (traditional village, 4.5 hour drive)

Find the spots in & around Ksamil

Ksamil is probably the busiest place in whole of Albania. It is very popular among Albanians. There are a lot of beach clubs, and prices are very expensive. Ksamil itself is a beautiful place, with turquoise water and white beaches. However, it was pretty hard for us to embrace this beauty because of the amount of people who are also (can’t blame them) enjoying Ksamil.

If you don’t mind this, you will definitely like Ksamil. There isn’t a particular beach which is better or more beautiful than the other. Ksamil itself is beach and clubs, so you can drop your towel (or rent a beach bed) anywhere. There are some good restaurants and bars/clubs which are worth mentioning:

  • The Mussel House (food)

  • Key 21 (bar)

  • Veranda (food, club)

  • Papu Gyros (food)

  • Brothers Fish & Meat (food)

  • Bora Bora (food, club)

Try to avoid clubs such as Orange beach club and Africana beach club. They are generally known for scamming and trying to rip off tourists with extreme prices. A little warning for you.

There are some things to do around Ksamil. A very famous spot close to Ksamil is the blue eye. This is a amazing piece of Albanian nature, about 30 minutes out of Ksamil. Unfortunately, it is very crowded. If you are curious, you should pay a visit here. Other options are the castle of Gjirokastër or Butrint National Park. And if you drive back to the airport, make a pitstop at Berat, a mountain village in the middle of Albania.

In short, Albania has a lot of potential to become a great country for travelers to visit. However, you have to be aware of the places you visit. Some people may try to scam you or are not so hospital, in our experience. In the coming years, Albania will probably become more popular around the world, which will in the end hopefully erase these hospitality related problems. We still recommend visiting this country if you were planning to do so!
