Bled is the most famous spot to visit in Slovenia. Why? Because of lake Bled. This picture perfect spot is your typical European magic. That is why this place is a good stop when doing an (European) roadtrip. There are few things to do here, so a couple of days is more than enough to discover this place.

Swim in Lake Bled

Lake Bled offers way more than just a nice view. You can do a lot of things around this lake. For instance, you can go swimming in it. It is a must for Tess to always take a dip in the water wherever we go, and lake Bled is no exception. It can be kind of cold though.

There are more things to do at lake Bled such as:

Rent a rowboat (20€) / paddle board (10€) / pletna (12€, larger boat)
stroll around the lake
have a drink in one of the bars
Visit Bled island

Fun fact: According to legend, whoever rings the bell on Bled island will have their biggest wish come true. There is a 500 year old story about a widow who made a bell in memory of her husband. While the bell was being transported across lake Bled, a storm struck, sinking the boat, the bell and everyone on board. The Pope ordered for a new bell and that one was successfully escorted to the island. Nowadays when you ring this bell, you are showing your honors to the Virgin Mary thus your wish will come true.

Visit Bled Castle

No, we are not talking about the castle on the image above, that is a church ;). Bled has its own castle, sitting on a hill with a nice view on the lake itself. This is an 1000 year old castle (the oldest in Slovenia) and will give the best view of lake Bled. You can go terracing with a good view on the lake, do a wine tasting or pay a visit to the museum. You can even have dinner here!

Hike at Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is a canyon just 15 minutes north of lake Bled (by car). When we say hike at Vintgar Gorge, we do not really mean hike as we normally would. Vintgar Gorge is a family friendly place where you can walk in between the canyon and enjoy Slovenia’s nature.

The river Radovna will flow alongside you when walking in this canyon. It is the same river that has carved out this canyon for millions of years! The walk is about 1.5km and ends with a nice view of the Slap Šum waterfall.
