ABOUT MENORCA
Menorca is the little lesser known sibling of Mallorca, which is a popular destination for partying youngsters with too much testosterone. Menorca is more a quiet, peaceful place. The waters are crystal clear and the sun is always shining. What do you need more?
WHAT TO DO IN MENORCA
Go bay hopping
Menorca has a lot of bays. There is plenty of choice in which kind of bay (or beach) fits your needs. The only thing you should be aware of is the fact there is a big difference in the beauty of the bays, according to us. Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a lot of bays are not what they seem on the internet. Here is our top three:
Cala Mitjanetta
Son Bou (beach)
Cala es Mesquida
Cala Mitjanetta
Cala Es Mesquida
Cala Mitjanetta
Cala Mitjanetta is our favorite. This bay lays next to Cala Mitjana, which is full of people and more tourist friendly. Mitjanetta is in a small corner and has these crystal clear waters without a lot of tourists. It has a great view as you can see in the photo and you can sit in the shadow if you like.
Son Bou
Son Bou is not a bay but a beach. It has shallow and clear water. There are some big resorts build right next to the beach. You probably wonder why we’re recommending this one now. Here’s the thing. If you walk up Son Bou just walk along the water to the right for 10 minutes and all the tourists will disappear as snow for the sun. You’ll have the whole beach just for yourself.
Cala Es Mesquida
This beach also has a hidden spot. The beach itself is pretty okay but not as nice as the ones above. If you walk down to the beach you’ll notice a rock on the left. Behind this rock you have your own Mediterranean piece of beach and water where you can enjoy your privacy. And if you’re getting to hot, just have a ice cream at Don Gelato’s.
Other bays
Menorca has plenty more bays to enjoy, but most of them are already ‘discovered’ by the big masses of tourists. Cala Macaraletta (header picture) and Cala Turqueta are really nice but so full of people. If you don’t mind this, then you should definitely visit those. Beware of the accessibility of the bays though. Although it is best to hire a car or scooter and explore the island, not all bays are directly accessible. You’ll have to walk a bit for some of them.
Where to eat & sleep in Menorca
Castillo de Sancho Panza
The hostels/hotels are pretty scarce in Menorca if it’s not in your budget to spent hundreds of dollars/euro’s on a place to sleep. There are a few places which are affordable. We listed up three for you for not more than 100EU per night so you can save up some money.
Left side of the island:
Sant Joan Apartments - Comes with a swimming pool.
The best restaurant here is probably Cuc Cuc. Make a reservation prior because this place is popular.
Middle of the island:
Castillo de Sancho Panza - A self check in-and-out hotel. Fully automated. Funny concept. And you’ll sleep in a sort of castle which is charming. It is walking distance from the most popular and one of the few clubs in Menorca, Cova d’en Xoroi.
You can have the best pizza of the island at Nou Vimpi. It is in the middle of the island in Ferrierres.
Right side of the island
Euro Hotel - Just plain and simple, as the name suggests.
The best food we had in Menorca was Clorofil la Cuina. This vegetarian restaurant has a terrace in the Menorcan sun, where you can have the best plant based dishes. And if you’re not full from all the things you ordered, finish it off with the best tiramisu.
