ABOUT COPENHAGEN

If you want to have a taste of Denmark, the best you can do is organize a citytrip to Copenhagen. This capital has a relaxed vibe, a number of sights and plenty of amazing restaurants. The best time to visit Copenhagen is during the summer between May and August but we can't give you a guarantee it won't rain.. From the airport you can take the metro to Copenhagen Central station and if your hotel is centrally located, everything is within walking distance. We would say 3 full days in Copenhagen is enough to explore everything this city has to offer. We don't recommend going any longer if only because of the high prices in Denmark.

WHAT TO DO IN COPENHAGEN

  • Rent a bike and cycle through the city

  • Visit urban Reffen for the best street food

  • Have a picnic at the cemetery

  • Visit Freetown Christiania

  • Enjoy amusement park Tivoli

  • Visit the Little Mermaid statue

  • Have a beer at Nyhavn

Rent a bike

This is always a good idea for a citytrip! You pass neighborhoods which you otherwise wouldn't have seen and you can visit the sights that are a bit further away. Copenhagen is very bike friendly with lots of bike lanes and as the city isn't too busy it's actually quite relaxing to bike around. Most hotels have bicycles that they rent out to their guests for a few hours or a whole day.

Reffen Copenhagen Street Food

Reffen is the largest urban street food venue in the Nordics. It has more than 40 food stalls and bars and they often organize events. The concept behind Reffen is to create an environment with sustainable food, culture and creativity. Every stall has its own food specialty and it's all delicious. Relax on one of the beach chairs and buy a bite or a drink when you feel like it. Check Reffen's official website for the dates of events or parties.

Have a picnic at Assistens cemetery

Not a standard activity during a citytrip and that's what makes this experience quite special. The Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen is the most famous graveyard in Denmark and definitely the most beautiful. Famous and not so famous Danish burials have been made here over the past 250 years. The cemetery is a public place where people have picnics, bike or go for a run. The park is interspersed with beautiful trees, tombstones and colorful flowers. Even today, funerals are still taking place here so pay attention to the signs where you can or cannot sit in the grass. Tip: get the best croissants at the bakery on the corner, Andersen & Maillard.

Visit Freetown Christiania

Once a military base, nowadays a colorful hippie community ruled by its own. In 1971 a group of hippies moved into the area and squatted the barracks. The community is independent of the Danish government and they have their own rules. Actually there are just 3; have fun, don't run and don't take photos. Walking around Christiania is impressive knowing this history. Here are some facts about Christiania: about 1000 people live there right now, at Pusher street they openly sell weed, they have their own currency and flag, there are plenty of live music venues and they have a famous skatepark inside.

Enjoy amusement park Tivoli Gardens

Up for some fun? Tivoli Gardens is located in the centre of Copenhagen and there is something to do for everyone. Whether you like wild rides, beautiful gardens or a music performance, Tivoli has it all. Entering the park is around 20 dollars but you do need to pay extra for the attractions and this is about 40 dollars on top of your entrance fee. If you go in the evening thousands of lights create a fairytale atmosphere that even inspired Walt Disney.

Visit the Little Mermaid statue

Despite being only a relatively small statue in the water, every day dozens of buses stop in front of this attraction. The sculpture of the little mermaid was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. The statue of the little mermaid is located in the northern harbor of Copenhagen and we therefore visited this attraction with a rented bicycle.

Have a beer at colorful Nyhavn

Probably the only spot in Copenhagen where you see colorful houses, apart from Christiania. The canals' purpose was a gateway from the sea to the old inner city where the ships unloaded and loaded their cargo and the fishermen sold their daily catch. Number 9 is the oldest house of the area build in 1681 and the famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen lived at number 20 when he wrote some of his most famous fairy tales. Nowadays you will find a lot of restaurants and bars alongside the old port where tourists and local people enjoy a beer while listening to jazz music.

SKAAL

Mæxico

More in the mood for Mexican food? Mæxico has 3 locations around the city to choose from and they all have a festive and friendly atmosphere. Order different taco's to share with the whole table or enjoy a delicious bowl by yourself.

SKAAL København

Copenhagen has several craft beer bars but SKAAL is one of Denmark's largest. They have a great selection of draft beer (over 50!) and you can even put together your own beer tasting. Drink your cold beer in the sun (if you're lucky) at their terrace or enjoy the cozy atmosphere at one of their tables inside.

Halmtorvet 9

The perfect start of your Friday or Saturday afternoon. Enjoy beers and homemade cocktails in their inside garden to celebrate the weekend. When it gets dark outside, the lights are dimmed and the DJ turns up the music inside for a party. Keep in mind that they don't serve any food so you should enjoy a dinner in between elsewhere.
