WHAT TO DO IN COSTA RICA

CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK

As soon as you have landed in San José, we recommend leaving the city as soon as possible. There is not much to do and the city can be dangerous for tourists here and there (as least that what was told to us).

The first destination, located in the very bottom of Costa Rica, is Corcovado National Park, which has more biodiversity than the the entirety of Europe.

The base to explore this park is called Drake Bay, a very small village from where almost all the tours to Corcovado start.

Corcovado really spoiled us in the different types of animals that we encountered. A sea crocodile (yes, they exist) appeared before we even entered the beach. We saw yropical birds, monkeys, anteaters, tapirs, sloths, snakes, tarantulas, you name it.

Guides are pretty important for this trip. Even though they are mandatory here, a good guide can really enhance your experience here.

Believe it or not, we also saw 2 puma’s. Extremely rare, but because of dedicated guide who went on deeper in the park with us (after everybody returned) we were able to track them down. What a sight to behold. It still gives the goosebumps.

Drake bay is also a great base to go snorkeling around isla del Caño, where you can also expect a lot of animals.

The last option we recommend is doing the Drake bay hike trail, where you will walk past multiple beaches where you can cool off when you get to hot. A very nice hike which you don’t have to ‘finish’ because you can just stop at whatever beach once you don’t feel like walking further.

Accommodation, food and drinks

  • Accommodation: Mirian’s Place

  • Breakfast: Coco cafe

  • Lunch: Nature cafe

  • Dinner: Lookout restaurant

UVITA

Uvita is special for multiple reasons. Uvita is great for surfing (if you are somewhat more experienced), has some great food options, stuff to explore and the accommodations here are something else. There is one that really deserves a special mention: Selva Armonia. This immersive resort in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle has got it all. They grown their own (vegan) food, have a pool, a bar and their own massage options. But the best thing is the view. It might well be the best view we ever had from an accommodation.

Selva Armonia has a view over the famous whale tail, a natural occurrence of the waves that formed a whale tail when you look at it from above. Fun fact: whales pass by here twice a year, which makes the whole thing even more special.

Another activity we recommend is visiting the Nauyaca waterfalls, which are considered the most beautiful of Costa Rica. We agree on this one, even though there is a waterfall that is up there as well. Later more about this one.

For surfing, you can head to any beach where you will find local surf shops to rent a board. Do mind that the waves here are for more advanced surfers. We have experienced this the hard way ;)

SANTA TERESA

From Uvita, you can follow the coastline north until you reach the Nicoya Peninsula. Here lies Santa Teresa, a bohemian village where surfers, yogis and backpackers meet. The dirt roads are dusty, the waves are constant and the atmosphere is so relaxed that many travelers stay longer than planned.

What to do in Santa Teresa
Surfing! Like many coastal towns in Costa Rica, surfing is often at the top of the list of activities here. Take advantage of the long beach breaks of Playa Carmen and Playa Hermosa. The more advanced surfers gather at Playa Santa Teresa during sunset. All you have to do is get a cold beer at the supermarket and enjoy the surfers and the beautiful colors of the setting sun.

Book a yoga session at sunrise or sunset

Health in both nutrition and exercise is an important motto in Santa Teresa. Yoga is therefore the perfect activity for this place!

Explore the Nicoya Peninsula

Combine adventure with relaxation and rent a quad to explore all the beaches in the area. Because the roads are sometimes bad, the quad is the perfect means of transport. Since the peninsula has so many places to explore, driving around can easily be a whole day activity. Just make sure you end up at a nice spot to see the sunset.

Travel tip: To reach Santa Teresa you have to take the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera and continue via jungle roads. Make sure your car is a 4x4, especially in the rainy season. If you are not traveling with your own rental car, there are also buses from Paquera to Santa Teresa.

Accommodation, food and drinks

Santa Teresa has tons of great places to eat, drink or stay, but here are our favorites:

  • Accommodation: Socialtel Santa Teresa

  • Breakfast: The Bakery

  • Lunch: The Somos Restaurant

  • Dinner: Kooks Smokehouse and Bar

  • Drinks: Banana Beachclub

MONTEVERDE

After a good dose of sea and sun, it's time for some cooler air. Monteverde is located at an altitude of about 1,400 meters and is known for its mysterious cloud forest, where clouds literally hang between the treetops. Everything here revolves around nature and adventure. Make sure you bring some warm clothes because it is considerably colder here than other areas of Costa Rica.

The cloud forest
Visit one of the famous cloud forests of Monteverde. Travelers often choose between Monteverde Cloud Forest and Santa Elena Cloud Forest. The former is more popular, mainly because of the beautiful hanging bridges that you encounter on the route. Santa Elena is known for being a bit quieter in terms of visitors, which also increases the chance of spotting animals. For both parks, if you want to walk through the park with few other tourists, you have to get to the park very early. With a lot of patience, you might even spot a hummingbird like we did!

Go ziplining between the treetops

One of the longest lines in Latin America! It may be a bit touristy but once you are floating over the rainforest it feels like you are alone with nature.

Visit a local coffee farm

You will learn everything about the process of making coffee in a few hours. Don Juan tours is recommended. We found the tour quite expensive but also super interesting! You will be told everything about the process of making cacao and coffee.

Accommodation, food and drinks

  • Accommodation: Hostel Cattleya

  • Breakfast: Stella's Monteverde

  • Lunch: Cafe Capucchino y Restaurante

  • Dinner: Taco Taco Monteverde

  • Drinks: Bar Amigos

LA FORTUNA

The last stop on the route is La Fortuna, located at the foot of the impressive Arenal volcano. Here you can experience adventure and relaxation: you can go into the jungle, raft on wild rivers, but also relax in natural hot springs.

What to do in La Fortuna

  • Hike with the Arenal volcano in the background through the national park: This national park has several hiking trails that take you past lava fields, cloud forests and viewpoints. The Lava Trail 1968 is our favorite hike and offers a great view of how the landscape has recovered after a volcanic eruption. Take a guide with you if you want to learn more about the flora, fauna and volcanic history or go on your own with a map or GPS.

  • Relax in the natural hot springs: Because the Arenal volcano is still thermally active, you’ll find plenty of hot springs in the area, from luxury spas to ‘free’ springs in the middle of the jungle. For a relaxing experience, Tabacón, Eco Termales or Baldi Hot Springs are great places. Tabacón is the most popular so you might want to make a reservation. Want to keep it budget-friendly? Then head to El Chollín, a free river where locals and travellers alike relax in the warm water.

  • Visit the Mistico Hanging bridges: Be sure to arrive here very early in the morning, since this is one of the most famous spots of Costa Rica. The hanging bridges are iconic for Costa Rica and therefore visited all year round. You will also have the highest chances of spotting animals if you go early.

  • Take a dip at the La Fortuna waterfall: About a 10-minute drive from the center of La Fortuna you will find the La Fortuna waterfall, an impressive waterfall of over 70 meters high. The walk down and up are short but tough, and absolutely worth it! You can swim in the cool water at the bottom, a wonderful refreshment after the descent. It does get busy here, so we recommend going early!

If you have the time for it, we highly recommend visiting Tenorio Volcano National Park. About a 2,5 hour drive from La Fortuna to the north, you will find one of the most magical natural phenomena of the country: the Río Celeste, a sky-blue river that owes its color to a chemical reaction between minerals. It is the highlight of this park, where you can easily walk around for a few hours. The story as told by the locals is that Río Celeste got its stunning color when God dipped his brush in the river as he was painting the sky.
